The recent World Travel Awards held at Diamonds La Gemma Dell’Est in Zanzibar, Tanzania, turned into a night where Serena Hotels reaffirmed their dominance of the hotel industry in the East African region. East Africa’s leading hotel group walked away with an impressive 12 awards, including the most prestigious one, “Africa’s Leading Hotel Brand.”
The World Travel Awards, dubbed the “Oscars” of the travel industry, acknowledge reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism and travel industry at a global scale.
At the awards held on April 9, Serena Hotels bagged top honours with Nairobi Serena being named Africa’s Leading Green Hotel for the second time, underscoring the hotel’s continued commitment to sustainable practices in Kenya. Nairobi Serena Hotel was also named Kenya’s Leading Business Hotel.
Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa in Uganda won the award for Uganda’s Leading Presidential Suite. This particular facility is famous for offering guests a golfing experience at its 9-hole (soon to be 18-hole) golf course and a fantastic view of Lake Victoria. Still in Uganda, Kampala Serena was recognised as Uganda’s Leading Hotel.
In Rwanda, Kigali Serena hotel retained its position as Rwanda’s Leading Hotel for the 5th year in a row.
Further south in Mozambique, the Polana Serena Hotel won two awards: Mozambique’s Leading Hotel as well as Mozambique’s Leading Presidential Suite. This particular property is famed for being an architectural gem.
However, it is in Tanzania that the biggest scoop happened with Serena Group taking home four awards. Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel was recognised as Tanzania’s Leading Hotel as well the hotel with Tanzania’s Leading Presidential Suite. Zanzibar Serena Hotel in Stone Town was chosen as Zanzibar’s Leading Hotel and Tanzania’s Leading Boutique Hotel.
Speaking soon after receiving the awards, the Managing Director of Serena Hotels, Mr Mahmud Janmohamed, said, “It is our staff who make it happen, their commitment to excellence is beyond doubt and management appreciates their continued efforts. We wish to thank all our esteemed clients, business partners and supporters for voting for us and for believing in us. We promise we shall continue to endeavour to lift the Serena Experience to greater heights.”
Once companies are nominated for the World Travel Awards, they are voted for online by individuals and travel agents globally based on issues such as customer relations, creativity, and quality of service, standards, guest satisfaction, product innovation and business acumen. The results are then inspected and reviewed by a group of experts from the travel industry. All the votes are internally audited to ensure the validity of each single vote.
