Tembera U Rwanda Domestic Tourism Campaign Heads to Rubavu

As 2016 comes to an end, local tourists have another chance to escape the daily grind of day-to-day living and become fun-seekers as the Rwanda Development Board’s latest domestic tourism campaign, Tembera U Rwanda-Jump on the Bus, heads to Rubavu district.

The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) launched the campaign at the beginning of October with the aim of growing the number of domestic travellers in the country.

At the beginning of the campaign, Belise Kariza, the chief tourism officer at RDB, reminded Rwandans that taking holidays at home offers benefits that endure.

“…everyone can be a tourist in his local environment and discover his country’s rich biodiversity, history and unique culture,” said Kariza, who has taken part in all the previous trips during this campaign.

The forthcoming trip to Rubavu, which will take place on December 17-18, follows similar excursions that led local travellers to the country’s Heritage Corridor and Nyungwe National Park in the Southern Province.

This month’s Tembera U Rwanda-Jump on the Bus campaign focuses on the Western Province as RDB’s tourism department staff join journalists and members of the tourism industry to explore some of the fantastic experiences that this province has to offer.

Rubavu has a diverse set of assets that position it favourably as a tourism destination and a future growth point. That this beach town is located near both Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and DR Congo’s Virunga National Park makes it an alternative accommodation base for leisure travellers in search of the region’s premier attraction: mountain gorillas.

Rubavu lies at the tip of an incipient tourism circuit connecting Musanze in the north via Kivu Belt to Nyungwe and Rusizi in the south. The shores of Lake Kivu offer recreational opportunities in the form of a beachfront, water activities, attractive scenery and lake cruises.

Also, worth noting is Rubavu’s proximity to Goma, a major city in eastern DR Congo, which positions the town as a service gateway offering well-developed hospitality, banking, retail, transport and other services associated mainly with cross-border trade.

Activities that travellers are expected to partake in during this trip include exploring exploring the Congo Nile Trail, climbing Mount Rubavu, cycling, Rubavu City tour, visiting Rwanda’s ancient brewery, kayaking, boat riding, fishing, hot spring tour, watersport oriented products, coffee and tea tours, ecotourism in Mukura-Gishwati Park, visiting art galleries and much more. Hikers and bikers will thoroughly enjoy the trail and walks along the beautiful scenic views on Lake Kivu.

According to RDB, this campaign is wholeheartedly supported by the private sector. “In Rubavu, the Rwanda Tours and Travel Association and Hoteliers’ association members will provide important discounts… King Fisher Journeys will offer kayaks and stand-up paddle boards,” RDB said.
